PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The goal of this program is to provide pharmacy technicians, regardless of their practice setting, with the basic knowledge and tools to assist them in providing quality care to their clients and to update their knowledge and skill sets.
SPEAKER INFORMATION:  Dr. Brittain earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Wilkes University, Pennsylvania and completed post graduate year at Campbell University and Kerr Drug, NC.  She is a member of numerous state and national pharmacy organizations and has held several leadership positions. She is board-certified in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and is a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDCES).

Medication Safety in the Geriatric Population

  1. Describe a framework for improving medication safety practices in the geriatric population
  2. Identify age-related changes in older adults that can impact medication therapy
  3. Identify common red flags in geriatric medication regimens
  4. Assess a safety scenario/event and recommend a plan of action to improve medication safety
 
Pharmacy Law: Contraception & Women’s Health
(ACPE UAN 0062-9999-22-038-L03-T, 1 credit hour, knowledge-based)
Objectives:
  1. Discuss current contraceptive prescribing practices by pharmacists in the United States
  2. Describe established access pathways to contraception in South Carolina
  3. Identify and describe opportunities and challenges to pharmacist provided contraception services
  4. Describe proposed legislation, including South Carolina’s Pharmacy Access Act
 
Pharmacy Technicians & Vaccination

Objectives:
  1. Discuss implications of current legislation on immunization practices incorporating pharmacy technicians
  2. Identify requirements for vaccinating patients, including education, administration, and documentation
  3. Recommend appropriate practices for vaccine administration, emergency management, and safety
  4. Summarize recent changes to ACIP and CDC recommendations for pediatric & adult patients
 
Effective Communication Strategies

Objectives:
  1. Describe emotional intelligence
  2. Discuss results of emotional intelligence assessment
  3. Identify your personality type using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment
  4. Discuss communication styles and strategies for interpersonal communication
  5. Discuss common conflicts at work and effective methods for conflict resolution, including the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode instrument
Afternoon Session
 
COVID-19 Update: Vaccines, Therapeutics & Testing

Objectives:
  1. Discuss current recommendations for prevention, identification, and treatment of COVID-19
  2. List available COVID-19 vaccines and describe safety and efficacy considerations
  3. List available COVID-19 treatments and describe safety and efficacy considerations
  4. Describe best practices for testing in the outpatient setting for COVID-19, including the utility of home-based testing

  3. Discuss safety concerns with natural products, including production, quality assurance, and hazards of use
  4. Discuss legal implications associated with the use and sale of common products
 
CAM Practices & Products

Objectives:
  1. List and describe complementary, alternative and integrative medicine practices and products
  2. Identify reliable resources regarding complementary, alternative and integrative medicine practices and products
