PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The goal of this program is to provide pharmacy technicians with the basic knowledge and tools to assist them in providing quality care to their clients and to update their knowledge and skill sets.
SPEAKER INFORMATION:  Dr. Brittain earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Wilkes University, Pennsylvania and completed post graduate year at Campbell University and Kerr Drug, NC.  She is a member of numerous state and national pharmacy organizations and has held several leadership positions. She is board-certified in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and is a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).

Morning Session
 
Pharmacy Law: REMS Programs (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-020-L03-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Define and describe the purpose of Risk Evaluation & Mitigation Strategies (REMS) programs
  • List components of REMS programs
  • Identify medications that require REMS programs
  • Given a medication, describe the required actions per the REMS program
Medication Safety: Safety Considerations in Self-care (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-021-L05-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe common OTC medication practices and potential issues that may arise with their use
  • Identify classes of OTC medications that are high risk for certain patient populations
  • Discuss precautions that can be used to prevent safety issues with OTCs
  • List components of drug fact labeling and identify how this information can be used to improve the safety of OTC medications
Immunization Update (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-022-L06-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Discuss the collective role of health care professionals in immunization practices
  • Summarize recent changes to the ACIP and CDC immunization recommendations for both adults and children
  • Obtain pertinent patient-specific information to identify vaccine needs or contraindications
Tobacco Cessation (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-023-L01-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
 
  • Describe the importance of tobacco cessation
  • Define and describe tobacco cessation programs
  • Identify barriers to quitting and triggers for relapse
  • Compare and contrast available OTC treatment options for tobacco cessation
  • Discuss safety issues with OTC treatment products
Afternoon Session
 
Pharmacy Law: Opioid Monitoring and Naloxone Use (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-024-L03-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Discuss the opioid crisis as it relates to South Carolina
  • Describe best practices for prescribing and dispensing opioid analgesics
  • Identify strategies for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to detect prescription opioid abuse
  • Discuss the role of naloxone in prescription opioid therapy
Medication Safety: High Risk & High Alert Medications (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-025-L05-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Identify common medications considered high risk in select patient populations
  • Identify common medications that contribute to falls in the elderly
  • Discuss procedures to reduce the risk of falls in the elderly
  • Evaluate a patient’s fall risk based on a review of a patient’s medication list
 
New Drugs in Diabetes Care (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-026-L01-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Define Type 2 Diabetes and review common medications used in the treatment of diabetes
  • Identify recently approved medications used in diabetes care
  • Describe each medication’s medication class, storage requirements and special administration instructions if applicable
OTC/Self-care Allergic Rhinitis (ACPE UAN 0062-9999-18-027-L01-T, 1.0 hour)
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe appropriate non-pharmacologic treatments for allergy
  • Compare and contrast available OTC treatment options for allergy
  • Discuss safety issues with OTC allergy products

Requirements for CE Credit

To claim credit, participants must sign-in at the beginning of the session and attend the entire session.  No partial credit will be issued.  Participants must complete an online evaluation within 30 days (providing their correct NABP e-profile number and day/month of birth) in order to ensure credit is reported to the NABP CPE Monitor.  Any credit claimed greater than 60 days from the date of the program will not be accepted by the NABP CPE Monitor.
